Tartaric Acid

Tartaric acid, also known as 2,3-dihydroxybutyric acid, is a carboxylic acid with the chemical formula C4H6O6. It is found in various plants, such as grapes and jackfruit. It is also one of the main organic acids in wine. As an antioxidant added to food, it can give food an acidic taste. The main use of tartaric acid is as a beverage additive, and it is also a raw material for the pharmaceutical industry.

Products Application

Tartaric acid is commonly used in the production of drugs, mordants and tanning agents, and is also used as a reagent for splitting racemic basic compounds. It is also an acidulant in food additives, with a stronger sour taste than malic acid and lactic acid. Its several salts have important applications. For example, potassium sodium tartrate is used to prepare Fehling's reagent in the laboratory, which is used to identify aldehyde functional groups in the structure of organic molecules. The potassium and sodium salts of tartric acid are called Rochelle salts. When the crystals are subjected to pressure, they undergo polarization, causing an electric potential difference on the two ends of the surface (piezoelectric effect), which can be used to make piezoelectric components for use in radio and wired telecommunication receivers and microphones. In medicine, potassium sodium stibatoxy tartrate (commonly known as "poison tartrate") is used to treat schistosomiasis.
